About the Conference

We invite civil society representatives from the South East Asian region to a workshop on the state of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and the future of carbon markets. Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) was created with the aim and responsibility to tackle global climate mitigation and advance sustainable development. In recent years the CDM has been heavily criticized for not achieving this dual objective. Part of the problem lies in the lack of proper means for public engagement and the CDM’s lack of transparency. The South East Asian region is hosting more than 700 projects. This workshop aims to enable civil society organisations and local communities in South East Asia that are impacted by CDM projects to hold the CDM to account. This is even more important at a time where new carbon market mechanisms are being negotiated. Drawing on the experience of civil society organizations in the region, this workshop aims to:

  • Exchange experience with CDM projects in SEA including presentation of case studies
  • Discuss the role of civil society in the CDM and opportunities for engagement, including exercises on how to write comments facilitated by working groups
  • Explain national government’s environment and development responsibilities
  • Debate the necessity for safeguards in the CDM and other carbon market mechanisms including how to address human rights issues
  • Identify future climate change policy tools, and the requirements for market architecture in the post 2012 environment.  


Who should attend?

Representatives from social movements and NGOs in the South East Asian region that engage on various themes/issues connected with the environment, climate, social and human rights, gender equality and other related matters.
How much will it cost to participate?

There is a THB500 registration fee
Accommodation is provided for a limited number of participants travelling to Bangkok. Representatives of movements and NGOs can apply for travel expenses that will be awarded with respect to regional and organizational balance.
